Articles, journals and newspapers

Students and staff at the University of Gothenburg can access the journals through the university network, or by logging in with the GU account when outside of campus. Everyone visiting the University Library can use our computers to access the journals.

About accessing e-resources off-campus

With the service Browzine you can search, read, save and monitor many of the Library's electronic journals. Students and staff at the University of Gothenburg can access the articles in Browzine by logging in with their GU account.

Some of the printed journals are placed on open shelves, available for you to collect and borrow by yourself.

Older issues of journals are kept in closed stacks. These will have to be requested in Supersearch. If you are looking for older journals and you don't find them in Supersearch, you can use our scanned card catalogue Katalog -1957 (Pre -1957 Catalogue) or the printed card catalogue Katalog 58 at the Humanities Library.

If you need a journal that is not available at the University Library, you can suggest that we buy it. We will let you know if we can purchase the journal, and when you may have access to it.

About suggesting purchases

The database Svenska tidningar contains digitised newspapers covering nearly 1500 titles from 1645 to the present. The database does not contain newspapers from the latest four months. Newspapers older than 100 years are freely available directly in the database.

Newspapers that are less than 100 years old can only be read on special computers that have full access to the database for copyright reasons. There is one such computer at the Economics Library, one at the Humanities Library and one at the Social Sciences Library. Contact the libraries to book one of the computers.

About computers with full access to Svenska tidningar

Most of the Library's newspapers are available on microfilm at the Social Sciences Library Vasagatan. The microfilm collection contains almost all Swedish newspapers, around 850 titles. Most of them were microfilmed between 1979 and 2013. You can check whether we have a particular newspaper on microfilm by searching for the newspaper’s title in Supersearch.

You don’t need to order the microfilms, you can simply take them from the shelf yourself and view them on the library’s microfilm reader. To scan, save or print from a microfilm, you must use the Library's microfilm scanner. The microfilm collection and equipment are open to everyone.

The Social Sciences Library holds a number of older printed newspapers. These are placed in closed stacks and only accessible for researchers. These newspapers are marked "Tidningslägg" in their location and must be ordered in advance. The material is delivered to the Humanities Library. Please note that it can take up to 10 days before the material is available at the Humanities Library.

The Humanities Library has a number of older printed newspapers from the mid-18th century onwards. These are original versions and the newspapers are often in a delicate condition. They are therefore placed in closed stacks and may only be read in special reading rooms. You can request these older printed newspapers in Katalog-1957.

If you need facts about Swedish newspapers, such as ideology or place of publication, you can use The National Library of Sweden's services Nya and Gamla Lundstedt. They contain information about Swedish newspapers from 1645 onwards.

If you need a newspaper that is not a part of the University Library's collections, you can order an interlibrary loan of the newspaper on microfilm. If it's a newspaper article you need, you can order a copy of the article.
